Stories of sorcery, spirits, and eerie figures lurking in the shadows have charmed audiences for centuries, from stage to page. Tonight, we bring you a selection of spooky musical delights from the 17th century through the present. Some are silly, some are spine-tingling, and all show how the supernatural has wound its way into the musical imagination of every genre of vocal music.
In Henry Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas (premiered in 1689), the witches gather to weave mischievous spells that will bring about the downfall of their nemesis, Queen Dido. In The Magic Flute (1791), the Three Ladies conspire to help the Queen of the Night deceive our protagonist, Tamino. Libby Larsen’s Book of Spells (2009) gives this age-old fascination with magic a modern twist, conjuring a world where the spells are ours to share.
Schubert’s masterful Der Doppelgänger (1828) tells the story of a man who spots his own ghostly double out in the world. According to German lore, the doppelgänger is a harbinger of misfortune, and this piece was composed shortly before Schubert’s own premature death. “Miles” from Benjamin Britten’s opera The Turn of the Screw (1954) presents one of the most terrifying spectres in all of opera – one who haunts a young boy and lures him into wrongdoing with ghostly songs. In Hugo Distler’s Der Feuerreiter/The Fire Rider (1939) we hear of a mysterious and devilish figure donning a red hat and using the splinter of a cross to set the village mill alight. We end the program with a setting of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Bells that pulses with dissonant harmonies that clang, clash, and roar into the night.
Between melodies both lilting and brash, harmonies both colorful and jarring, Dr. Katherine Loflin will share stories from Cary’s own haunted past. Dr. Loflin is Chair of Cary’s Historic Preservation Commission, our town’s History Ambassador, and author of Hidden History of Cary. She is also the founder of The City Doctor Productions, which hosts a variety of historical tours throughout Cary.

Texts and Translations
Lacrimosa – Mozart’s Requiem
O how tearful that day,
on which the guilty shall rise
from the embers to be judged.
Spare them then, O God.
Merciful Lord Jesus,
grant them rest.
Three Ladies Trio – The Magic Flute
TAMINO
Help! Help, or I am lost,
doomed to fall prey to the cunning serpent!
Merciful gods
Now it’s coming nearer!
Ah, save me!
Ah, defend me!
THE THREE LADIES
Perish, monster, at our hands!
Victory! Victory! It is accomplished,
the heroic deed! He is delivered
by the boldness of our arms!
FIRST LADY
A charming young man, tender and beautiful!
SECOND LADY
So beautiful a youth I have never seen before.
THIRD LADY
Yes, yes! Truly, as pretty as a picture.
THE THREE LADIES
If I were to dedicate my heart to love,
t would have to be this young man.
Let us hasten to our sovereign,
and give her these tidings:
it may be that this fair man
can restore her lost repose.
FIRST LADY
Go then and tell her.
I’ll stay here meanwhile.
SECOND LADY
No, no, you two go.
I’ll watch over him here!
THIRD LADY
No, no! That cannot be.
I will guard him alone.
FIRST LADY
I’ll stay here meanwhile!
SECOND LADY
I’ll watch over him here!
THIRD LADY
I will guard him alone!
FIRST LADY
I’ll stay!
SECOND LADY
I’ll watch!
THIRD LADY
I’ll guard!
THE THREE LADIES
I, I, I
I’m supposed to go? Well, well, that would be a fine thing!
They want to be alone with him.
No, no, that cannot be!
What would I not give
to live with this young man!
If only I had him quite alone!
Yet no one’s going; it cannot be.
It is best if I go now!)
Fair and lovable young man,
dear young man, farewell!
Until I see you again!
Der Doppelgänger
Poetry by Heinrich Heine
The night is still, the narrow streets rest;
in this house lived my sweetheart.
She left the city long ago,
but the house still stands where it did.
A man stands there too, staring into the heights,
and wringing his hands out of deep anguish;
It terrifies me, when I see his face
for the moon shows me my own form.
You ghostly double, you pale companion,
why do you ape my love’s anguish
that tortured me on this spot,
so many nights, in days long past?
