Thank you for joining us! Tonight’s program weaves together timeless tidings and festive firsts that we hope will leave you feeling the joy and peace of the holiday season.
Sure, you’ve heard “Jingle Bells,” but do you know Barbara Streisand’s mixed meter version? It’s an exciting way to present a familiar tune. The beauty of Wilhousky’s “Carol of the Bells” and Luboff’s “Still, Still, Still” will be known to many, while John Ferguson combines a beloved carol (get ready to sing along!) with Daniel Kantor’s original melody, “Night of Silence.” And of course, no Holiday Pops concert would be complete without “The Christmas Song” and “Sleigh Ride.”
In 1978, Raymond Briggs wrote The Snowman, a wordless children’s picture book portraying the friendship between a young boy and his snowman. Five years later, the work was animated and orchestrated by Howard Blake. The feature song, “Walking in the Air,” depicts the moment the snowman and the young boy take flight soaring across Britain towards the North Pole. It’s partnered with “The Snowy Day,” based on the 1962 award-winning children’s book by Ezra Jack Keats. In 2016, Prime Video adapted the book into a short film with the title track performed by Boys II Men, heard here tonight.
We hope you’ll get a chuckle from one of our humorous titles of the evening, Tom Lehrer’s “Chanukah in Santa Monica.” Commissioned by Garrison Keillor for his famous radio show, “Prairie Home Companion,” Lehrer, a Grammy- nominated song satirist and math prodigy, said, “There was thus a deplorable lacuna in the repertoire, which this song, a sort of answer to ‘White Christmas,’ was intended to remedy.” You’ll also hear “The Twelve Days After Christmas” which tells the hilarious story of just what happened to all those gifts “my true love gave to me.”
Thank you again for choosing to spend your evening with us. We leave you with text from Jean Scheer’s “Christmas Once More” — “The ancient refrains are with us again, the tunes that will always endure… Gather near by the fire… Sip a cup of hot cider, come and sit next to me. Listen closely you’ll hear in each song that we sing… there is love – let the caroling start.”
