Our next concert, on February 2, is called Bach’s Awakening: Discover Cantata 140.

Cantata 140 is a chorale cantata composed by J.S. Bach in 1731. It is based on a very famous Lutheran hymn, “Wachet auf” (Sleepers, Awake!) that has been called “the king of chorales.” It is often sung during Advent as it describes awakening the faithful to the coming of their Lord.

Cantata 140 is Bach’s most popular chorale contata, and you’ll likely recognize some of the music. As one observer put it: “Every one knows that it is one of the most wonderful melodies he has ever heard, but nobody knows why.”*
