The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass

This program combines the sacred classical choral tradition with the sparkling down home sound of banjo, mandolin and fiddle!

About This Program

The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass combines the sacred classical choral tradition with the bluegrass sounds of fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo and bass. Composed in 2007, it has become a favorite across the country.

According to composer Carol Barnett, the piece brings “the solemnity of the classical choir-based mass together with the down-home sparkle of bluegrass.” She added that that piece allowed her “the chance to write cheery sacred music — all too rare in a medium rife with staid and even lugubrious settings.”

Joining CSC in this performance is Hank, Pattie & The Current, a Raleigh-based quintet fronted by two veteran NC bluegrass musicians: Hank Smith on banjo and Pattie Hopkins Kinlaw on fiddle and vocals. Joining forces with some of the Triangle area’s most versatile musicians, they create modern acoustic music that weaves bluegrass into the tapestry of jazz, blues, and classical styles.

Our Guest Artists

Hank Smith and Pattie Hopkins Kinlaw,  two of North Carolina’s veteran bluegrass musicians, join forces with some of the Triangle area’s most versatile musicians to create modern, American, acoustic music spotlighting their talents as composers and arrangers.

The band makes use of traditional bluegrass instrumentation in a nontraditional way to present original music to the listener that goes beyond the limits of the idiom.  Hank Smith plays banjo, Pattie Hopkins Kinlaw plays fiddle and sings. The band is rounded out with Ben Parker on guitar on vocals, Robert Thornhill on mandolin and vocals and E. Scott Warren on bass.
