About This Program
We are pleased to join The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle in performing Debussy’s The Blessed Damsel and Mendelssohn’s ravishing Psalm 42.
Claude Debussy was a celebrated composer with unconventional ideas of musical style, and composed his cantata, “La Damoiselle Élue,” for two soloists, female chorus and orchestra. His music was inspired by a French translation of an English poem by Dante Gabriel Rossetti who wrote the first version in 1850.
Felix Mendelssohn wrote his 42nd Psalm in the spring of 1837. Usually a severe self-critic, Mendelssohn’s enthusiasm for this work was exceptional and long lasting, and he often described it as his “very best sacred composition.”
