The Concert Singers of Cary continues its collaboration with the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, performing Franz Schubert’s incidental music to the 1823 play Rosamunde. Critics praised the music, but the play–a ludicrous tale of mistaken identity, pirates, poisoned letters and shipwrecks–survived only two performances.
Schubert’s music was nearly lost when the play closed. Fortunately, George Grove and Arthur Sullivan (the latter of Gilbert and Sullivan fame) discovered the music’s manuscripts in a cupboard in Vienna 44 years later, and brought it back to London to be performed.
