The Concert Singers of Cary will conclude their 2011-2012 concert series with the presentation of an evening of World Music on May 11th at 8:00 PM at the Cary Arts Center. Under the direction of Lawrence Speakman, The Concert Singers are in their 21st season of performances and their first as a resident performing organization at The Cary Arts Center.

The World Music Concert is entitled Earthsongs, referring to music native to cultures from around the globe. It includes music from Finland, China, India, Brazil, Argentina, Republic of Georgia and Africa. Music from the Buddhist and Jewish traditions are included as well as a choral setting of Primavera Porteña by Astor Piazzolla. Music from the United States is represented by African American Spirituals such as Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel and Motherless Child; a Gospel selection called Walk Together Children and a segment of songs from Appalachia that includes the Blue Grass song Cluck Ol’ Hen, Shenandoah and the Craig Hella Johnson arrangement of the Dolly Parton melody Light of a Clear Blue Morning. The music will be accompanied by a group of string instruments and percussion.

Founded in 1991, The Concert Singers of Cary is a Volunteer Choral Organization that provides a professional experience for musicians and audiences alike. For twenty one years the organization has been challenging assumptions of what a vocational performing organization can accomplish. Under the leadership of co-founder, conductor and Artistic Director Lawrence Speakman, the Concert Singers of Cary operates a 130 voice Symphonic Chorus, a Vocal Chamber Ensemble and two youth choirs. Known for their innovative programming, The Concert Singers perform music from diverse traditions as well as new and ground breaking works such as Richard Einhorn’s Voices of Light, composed in 1995 and performed simultaneously with the 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc, and William Grant Still’s And They Lynched Him on a Tree, composed in 1939.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5.00 for children 12 and under. Tickets to the performance are available at the Cary Arts Center box office, either in-person 101 Dry Avenue, Cary, NC 27513, or online here, through our partner etix, or at the door.

Thirty seven years before the debut of Messiah, the brash twenty year old Georg Frederic Handel was studying the new concertato style in Italy, then the virtuosic center of the Western world. The result was the musically pyrotechnic Dixit Dominus (Psalm 110) designed to flaunt his ability to write elaborate and technically challenging music for both vocal and instrumental performers. Miserere (Psalm 51) by Francesco Scarlatti is also featured as is J.S. Bach’s motet Singet dem Herr nein neues Lied (BWV225).. The Concert Singers of Cary Chamber Choir and the all professional Cary Choral Artists will be joined by an orchestra of Baroque Period instruments and professional soloists.
